Responsibilities
Hospital Corpsman (HM)
-
Provide emergency medical treatment to SEALs, Seabees, Marines, and other military personnel in the field.
-
Deliver emergency dental care, process dental X-rays, and assist in constructing dental crowns and bridges.

Support general and specialized surgeries as an operating room technician.
-
Administer a wide range of preventive care, immunizations, medications, and intravenous therapies.

Maintain detailed patient records, conduct clinical research, and perform medical testing.
Hospital Corpsman Advanced Technical Field (HM-ATF)
Hospital Corpsmen in this track go beyond traditional roles to perform life-saving duties in the most challenging environments.
Special Amphibious Reconnaissance Corpsman (SARC)

Provide advanced medical care and operational support for Marine Reconnaissance and Special Operations Forces.

Participate in direct action, special reconnaissance, foreign internal defense, and unconventional warfare missions.
Search and Rescue Medical Technician (SMT)
-
Perform emergency rescues and medical care from helicopters.
-
Support Search and Rescue (SAR), tactical evacuations, MEDEVAC, CASEVAC, and Combat Search & Rescue (CSAR).
Deep Sea Diving Medical Technician (DMT)
-
Deliver emergency care for diving-related illnesses and hyperbaric conditions.

Operate and maintain diving equipment, perform underwater inspections, and participate in special warfare and small boat operations.

Use specialized systems like Swimmer Delivery Vehicles and submarine Lock-in/Lock-out systems.
Work Environment
As a Hospital Corpsman, you’ll experience one of the most diverse and adventurous work environments in the Navy:

Serve on Navy ships, submarines, aircraft carriers, or on land in Navy medical facilities and field operations.

Work alongside Navy nurses, surgeons, and other medical professionals as a first responder in both clinical and combat settings.
If you pursue the Advanced Technical Field (HM-ATF), you will:

Train and operate in extreme environments, including deep-sea diving, airborne operations, and combat zones.

Work both independently and in teams, performing specialized medical duties in highly challenging conditions.
Training & Advancement
Hospital Corpsman (HM)
-
Complete Boot Camp followed by 14 weeks of « A » School at Fort Sam Houston, TX, focusing on the principles of patient care and emergency medical procedures.

Ongoing training opportunities in advanced medical specialties such as radiology, physical therapy, surgery, and dental care.
-
Opportunity to deploy with the Marines as a Fleet Marine Force Corpsman with additional specialty training.
Hospital Corpsman Advanced Technical Field (HM-ATF)
Following « A » School, candidates can specialize in one of three advanced tracks:
-
Special Amphibious Reconnaissance Corpsman Pipeline: 121 weeks of training, including reconnaissance, diving, demolitions, advanced medical skills, and airborne operations.

Search and Rescue Medical Technician Pipeline: 27 weeks of training in advanced life support, rescue operations, and helicopter-based emergency care.

Medical Deep Sea Diving Technician Pipeline: 28 weeks of training in diving physics, underwater medicine, and dive operations.
Advancement is competitive and based on performance, training completion, and leadership ability.

Qualifications & Requirements
General

U.S. citizenship required.

High school diploma or equivalent.
-
Normal color perception and vision correctable to 20/20.

Must meet security clearance requirements.
-
No disqualifying drug use history.
Additional Requirements for HM-ATF

Must be 28 years old or younger.
-
Minimum 6-year enlistment.

Must pass a Physical Screening Test (PST):
-
Swim: 12:30 (1.5 miles)

Sit-ups: 50

Push-ups: 50
-
Pull-ups: 10
-
Run: 10:30 (500 yd / 450 m)

Meet Student Naval Aviator (SNA) physical standards.

Must demonstrate maturity, physical endurance, attention to detail, and the ability to learn complex medical procedures under pressure.
